Alf Hambe
poet, singer/songwriter.
Welcome!
- to "a world in the sign of Belum"!
Alf Hambe, who was born in 1931, is a songwriter
whose melodies and lyrics have a highly personal style. His songs
are often set in Molom, a fantasy world of fabulous beeings and
landscapes that fire the imagination.
The songbook "Visa i Molom" (Song
in Molom) appeared in 1965, and the title song soon came to be
something of a signature tune for Alf Hambe. Alf himself explained
that the word Molom is a magic charm: "...ever since it
was first uttered, this magic charm has proved to have an innate
power to create its own mythological world".
But Molom is also "a borderland with
shifting boundaries" - a borderland between reality and
fantasy, a "water kingdom". Perhaps it is Alf's own
water kingdom, the sea coast of Halland and the coastal village
of Steninge where Alf has lived for many years which are indispensable
ingrediants in its own mythological world.
Hambe has also been inspired by Celtic
tales and mythology, such as the legend of King Arthur and the
quest of the Holy Grail, and his musical language shows traces
of Irish and Celtic influences.
Other songs describe Hambe's experiences
and people he has come across on his many and extensive travels
by sea and by land.
To Alf Hambe words have always been, and
will always continue to be, extremely important. Few people have
enriched the Swedish laguage with such fantasy and creativity
as Alf Hambe in his songwriting.
